For this project, I was tasked with creating a typographic poster using Tina Turner's song The Best. The song is an upbeat love song that is praising someone’s significant other while illustrating a pure, innocent type of love. It has been used in sports commercials, advertisements, movies, and tv shows. For my solution, I used the typeface Sharpie and added blocks of color to emulate paper. The concept was to make the poster feel like a handcrafted love note, hence the cutout hearts and layered paper in the background. Since the song was released, the message has also evolved into a song used for celebrations and championships. Since the song was commercialized for sports events, I decided to use the typeface URW Din for the supporting text because the typeface is a variation of one used for the Olympics. The song lyrics are also vertical to give the impression of type on a trophy plaque or ribbon. I really enjoyed this project and applying everything I’ve learned so far this semester in them. One day, I would like to revisit this project and experiment with more paper materials to implement into the final.
